Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 12:53PM "Recovering Teacher," a piece published in 2009 by Memoir(and), has just been awarded the NCTE Donald Murray Prize for work about writing and/or teaching writing.
You can see a sneak peek at Memoir(and).
The entire essay will appear in my collection, Teacher at Point Blank: Confronting Sexuality, Violence, and Secrets at a Suburban School, when Aunt Lute Books releases it in September 2010.

My Letter in The LA Times
Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 03:01PM
Following Monday's report in the Los Angeles Times about "what it's really like" navigating discipline in a real-life, real-time classroom, I sent in a letter which appeared today.
One curiosity to me (pointed out by my husband) is that of the five letters published, four come from education professionals--and, of those four, I'm the solitary woman voice.
Women statistically outnumber men in pink-collar K-12--and have, for nearly 150 years. The current ratio among professionals is nearly 8 to 2.
Where are you, Ladies? And what do you have to say about your workplace?
2009 NWSA Conference in Atlanta
Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 01:27AM I am fortunate to be presenting in a panel discussion Sunday November 15 with co-authors from (Re)Interpretations: The Shapes of Justice in Women's Experience (Cambridge Scholars Press 2009).
My paper explores a nearly ten-year legal case of student-on-teacher sexual bullying that took place in an affluent area of Los Angeles.
